MQL Pairs Competition 2023

Congratulations to Neil Wright of Soapsuds who, partnered with Ben Vincent of Warrington, won the Jubilee Pairs Competition held on 13th September. Neil was victorious last year too, so obviously enjoys the format.
Wirral were guaranteed a winner since all three pairs in the final contained a Wirral player, with Jim Eccleson and Sam Roberts among the other contenders. Full details can be found on the Merseyside Quiz League page, and you can watch the video of the final below:

FEENY AND RENDON CUP FINALS 2023

Oxton Conservatives reached the final of the Feeny Cup and lost narrowly to Wings in the Feeny Cup final. Commiserations to them – they overcame tough opposition to reach the final.

The Rendon Cup was won by Aardvarks who defeated St. Patrick’s comprehensively in their final, giving the team their first trophy in their long history. Congratulations to the team of John Garbutt, Martin Heale, Steve Lomas (captain) and Kris Jones and to Steve Jones, who was away for the final but played in earlier rounds. Martin wins a trophy in his first season with the team and, poignantly, the trophy win comes in the season in which long serving team member Bernie McGuigan passed away.

Aardvarks have a chance to add to their silverware as they are in the final of the MCC Plate competition, to be played on 17 May.

Full results of all these matches can be found on the MQL website.

Riley Cup Roind 1 Results and Round 2 Draw

Round Two games will be played on Monday 17th April 2023. Questions will be sent by post as some of the home teams opted for paper questions and I do not want to mix paper and electronic distribution.

Quarter finals will be played on 24th April 2023, so I would appreciate it if you would send the results in with the same speed as last night.

Best wishes

Paul Davitt

Wirral Handicap Cup

Many congratulations to Joey’s Nomads, who won the first ever Wirral Handicap Cup competition, the Absent Friends Trophy, by the narrowest possible margin. They won both the semi-final and final on the very last question – nailbiting doesn’t do it justice.

Thanks go to Kris Jones for organizing the competition and setting most of the questions.

Handicap Cup Finals Night

The semi-finals and final will be played upstairs at the Lever Club on Monday 20th March 2023

A draw will be held at 7.45 p.m. to decide which teams play each other and the matches will start at 8 p.m. There will then be a break for refreshments before the final.

There is plenty of room for spectators, so come along and support your second favourite team if you’re not involved.
