All players are invited to take part in a Pairs Competition to help celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the MQL. This will take place on Wednesday 11 September 2019 at Hoylake Social Club, 11 Trinity Road, Hoylake, Wirral CH47 2BR starting at 8pm.
Players who wish to take part will be ranked and then pairs will be created on the night by drawing a player from the top half of the rankings with one from the other half. The first stage of the competition is usually a 40 or 50 question quiz in which each pair write their answers to spoken questions.
The top 6 pairs progress to a “15 to 1” style Semi-Final in which each pair starts with 3 “lives” and questions are asked to each pair in turn. When three pairs have been eliminated then the remainder go through to the Final played on the same lines.
If time permits, we also hope to have a Plate Competition so that as many as possible remain involved as the evening progresses.
There is no entry fee and light refreshments will be served. If you would like to take part then please register with Brian Thompson (briathom59@gmail.com) by midday on Wednesday 4 September (1 week before the competition).

As you will remember, Andrea Jones sadly passed away last summer. Shortly before her death she recorded episodes of Fifteen to One which will begin airing on Channel 4 on Friday 14th June. You get up to 3 chances to make the final three and so she could be appearing on Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th as well.
Andrea was a huge character in Wirral division 2 and I'm sure seeing her on TV will bring back some happy memories for us all.

Congratulations go to Oxton Cons who won the MCC Plate competition with a comfortable win in the final against Judges of Liverpool thanks to a superb all round team performance.
Wirral's Karl Whelan and Jim Eccleson were both appearing in the Mimir final against Pat Gibson (of Eggheads fame) and John Wilson, both of Ormskirk. It was a great competition and Karl was leading going into the final 3 questions but Pat knew all 3 and pipped Karl by 1 point.
There was also moderate success for Wirral players at the Liverpool Pairs evening. Pam Baker (Soapsuds), who was paired with Stuart Scholes of Kluggers finished 4th and Jon Stitcher (Plasterer's Arms) who was paired with Peter Harris of Aigburth Swans came 3rd.

Former Wirral Quiz League player Peter Burbidge died on the 5th April and his funeral is at Landican Cemetary onTuesday 23.4.2019 at 3.30pm
He was a founder member of the team Oxton Dynamo in the late eighties - along with Jim Robinson and his brother Bob. The team achieved promotions from Division 3 through Division 2 into Division 1 by 2000 and was then wound up - he later played for Oxton Conservatives. In the last couple of years he had retired from competitive quizzing but continued to enjoy quiz nights.

Seven Wirral players attended the Merseyside wide finals night for the Mimir, 5 of us fell at the first stage but Karl Whelan and Jim Eccleson went all the way and have qualified for the Mimir final which will take place at 8pm on the 15th May at Hoylake Social Club. This event will also host the MCC final and the MCC plate final, the latter of which will see Wirral team Oxton Conservatives playing.
There is also the presentation of trophies so the Wirral President's Shield team, captained by Steve Lomas will be collecting the President's shield AND the Presidential Challenge.
The evening will be catered and it would be great to see lots of Wirral players in attendance to cheer on Karl and Jim and to celebrate the great performance of the President's Shield team.
